Basel World 2020 und weitere Messen wegen Coronavirus abgesagt

Paukenschlag in der Uhren-Industrie: Die drei Leitmessen Watches and Wonders Geneva, Time to Move (Swatch-Gruppe) und die Basel World 2020 werden wegen des Coronavirus (COVID-19) nicht stattfinden. Die Time to Move wurde bereits Anfang Februar abgesagt, Ende Februar zogen auch die anderen beiden Messen nach – unter anderem wegen des Verbots von Veranstaltungen mit mehr als tausend Teilnehmern durch den Schweizer Bundesrat. Eine nachvollziehbare Reaktion auf die anhaltende globale Verbreitung des Virus und das damit einhergehende Gesundheitsrisiko…

“For health safety reasons“: Basel World 2020 abgesagt

Die Baselworld spricht offiziell nur von einer „Verschiebung“, konkret auf Januar 2021. Bei den Verantwortlichen der Baselworld dürfte die aktuelle Situation unschöne Erinnerungen an das Sars-Debakel von 2003 wecken, gleichzeitig verschafft die Coronavirus-Epidemie der angeschlagenen Messe Zeit, um ihre Wunden zu lecken.

Die offizielle Meldung der Baselworld lautet (Auszug):

For health safety reasons and in accordance with the precautionary principle following the bans of large-scale public and private events issued today by the Swiss federal and cantonal authorities, Baselworld announces that it has taken the decision to postpone the show to Thursday 28th January 2021 to Tuesday 2nd February 2021 (Press Day on Wednesday 27th January), due to concerns related to Covid-19.

Nur einen Tag vor der Baselworld-Ankündigung wurde auch die Watches and Wonders Geneva (ehemals SIHH) 2020 wegen des Coronavirus abgesagt. Offiziell heißt es wie folgt:

In view of the latest developments concerning the worldwide spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus, it is the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie’s duty, as organizer of Watches & Wonders Geneva, to anticipate the potential risks that travels and important international gatherings could entail. Therefore, in order to protect the health and wellbeing of all our guests, press, partners and teams, the decision has been taken to cancel the upcoming edition of Watches & Wonders Geneva (formerly known as the SIHH) and its ‘In the City’ program, initially due to take place in Geneva from April 25th to 29th 2020. The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie understands the disappointment this year’s cancellation may cause, and remains at the disposal of its partners and guests for any queries they may have. The FHH is already working on the organization of 2021 edition of Watches & Wonders Geneva.

Time to Move 2020 abgesagt

Nachdem sich die Swatch Gruppe mit sämtlichen Marken wie Omega, Blancpain, Glashütte Original, Breguet, Tissot, Hamilton etc. von der Baselworld verabschiedet hat, fand 2019 erstmalig die Swatch-interne Messe „Time to Move“ in Zürich statt, die sich an den Fachhandel und Journalisten richtet. Auch 2020 sollte die Time to Move wieder stattfinden – eigentlich. Anfang Februar 2020 kam die offizielle Meldung, dass wegen der Ausbreitung des Coronavirus die Messe abgesagt wird:

Considering the uncertainty related to the 2019-nCoV Coronavirus outbreak, and in order to guarantee the welfare of our guests, partners, and colleagues, Swatch Group has decided not to hold the Time to Move event, which should have taken place in Zurich from March 4-6, 2020. The Swatch Group Prestige brands will introduce their new products to the markets at a later stage during regional events, in order to prevent their partners from travelling internationally in an insecure climate. 

Anstelle der Time to Move will die Swatch Gruppe nationale Veranstaltungen durchführen, um die Neuheiten vorzustellen.

Ob auch die beiden Uhrenmessen Baselworld und Watches and Wonders Geneva (ehemals SIHH) wegen des Coronavirus gestrichen werden, ist derzeit noch unklar. Die beiden Messen finden dieses Jahr erst Ende April bzw. Anfang Mai statt, sodass für eine Entscheidung noch Zeit sei: „Wir beobachten die Situation sehr genau“, heißt es sowohl aus Genf als auch aus Basel.
